Sikorski found out the truth about situation in Belarus

The delegation of the Belarusian opposition has met with the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry Radoslaw Sikorski in Warsaw.

The delegation included the former chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus, the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada Stanislau Shushkevich, the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka, the leader of the Belarusian Popular Front party Alyaksei Yanukevich, the leader of “For Freedom” movement Alyaksandr Milinkevich, the chairman of the “Fair World” party Syarhei Kalyakin, the leader of the Young Front Zmitser Dashkevich, a politician Ales Mikhalevich.

The details of the meeting with the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski were told to charter97.org website by the first leader of the independent Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich.

“In the beginning of the meeting Radoslaw Sikorski stated that he is very glad that meetings of Polish authorities with the Belarusian opposition have become regular. He said that he knows that Belarus is in favour of participation in the EU program “Eastern Partnership”, but also understands that not everybody sees that in the same way, and offered us to express our opinion on this issue. I told that I have a positive view of the Eastern Partnership: Europeans want Belarus to move in the direction of freedom and democracy. But then one of the members of the Belarusian delegation started to support the dialogue of the EU and Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime. I stated that I find that unacceptable and inexcusable. There is no dialogue between the authorities and the opposition in Belarus, so what dialogue between the EU and the regime is possible?”

The West is making a number of concessions to Belarus, and starts interaction with Lukashenka’s regime. And it does nothing, everything continues in the same way: repressions, stifling of freedom of thought. When the West showed solidarity in its demands to Lukashenka’s regime, political prisoners were released. When the West started to support the dictatorship, there is nothing more then promises on the part of the dictatorship. There are no real changes in the electoral legislation, pressure on democrats continues, their dismissals and detentions for participation in the “election”. Sikorski listened to our arguments very attentively. It was decided to continue such meetings in the future,” Stanislau Shushkevich said.

On the same day the delegation of the Belarusian opposition met with deputies of the Polish parliament.

“The meeting was presided by the head of the Sejm Delegation on Ties with Belarus Robert Tyszkiewicz. Many Polish MPs were very critical to Lukashenka’s regime. We wanted to attract attention of Polish MPs that nobody persecutes the Poles in Belaruson ethnical grounds; they are persecuted as people who have an independent position. It was met by full understanding of the parliamentarians. They understand tat repressions in Belarus are carried out against all who strive for democracy.

By the way, it was also mentioned that there such influential Poles as, for instance, the former Prime Minister of Poland Marek Belka who work in the International Monetary Fund now. I think Polish representatives in such organisations would turn attention to what is happening in belarus, and they are unlikely to be so kind when giving loans to the dictatorship any more,” Shushkevich stated.
