Are names of riot policemen who had broken Maya Abromchyk’s leg known?

“I have already a third lawyer, but I do not trust him either. When they hear about our case, they change countenance immediately,” Maya Abromchyk’s mother said.

The leg of the 21-year-old student of the history department of the Belarusian State University was broken on December 19. She said it happened after beating by riot policemen in a paddy wagon. After that she was driven around Minsk in the paddy wagon, and her requests for medical help were ignored. Only when she was taken to the prison in Akrestsin Street, an ambulance was called in, “Nasha Niva” writers.

Without friends of Maya this fact could have remained unknown, as many other facts of the events on the Square. Her friends contacted journalists, and the story of the student has become known worldwide. Maya has become a symbol.

Her leg is healing, though Maya still cannot walk without a pair of crutches. The girl had to be transferred to the correspondence department of her faculty. The criminal case related to the fact of beating has not been initiated.

“The appeal to the prosecutor’s office of Maskouski district of Minsk was lodged on December 21, 2010. It was forwarded to the police and became a part of the “mass riots” case. Then it was returned to the prosecutor’s office,” Maya Abromchyk said.

Technically, the diagnosis of Maya (determined on the first days after the trauma), substantiated by documents should be enough to open a case.

By the way, it was not difficult to find those responsible for beating. Maya Abromchyk was not detained on Independence Square, but closer to the remand prison in Valadarski Street. She was beaten together with her friend, Andrei Zaderkouski. Maya tried to come to the defence of Andrei, and after that she received a number of blows. After that she could not stand independently. As said by Andrei and Maya, two riot policemen were beating them. They took Andrei to the paddy wagon, and he was carrying Maya in his arms. The girl was placed to a hospital after the prison. And her friend Andrei had to serve a term, and a report was drawn up against him.

There were the names of two soldiers of the 8th platoon of special task police regiment of the main directorate of Interior Affairs of Minsk city executive committee, I. V. Mazyjla and A. N. Yakauleu. There persons wrote in the official report of detention, that they detained Andrei Zaderkouski near Independence Square on December 19 in the evening.

However, Maya was denied even Andrei’s being a witness in court. “The prosecutor told that we were taken to paddy wagons at 10.30 p.m. according to the detention reports. And I cannot invite Andrei as a witness, as I state that I had been beaten and detained at about midnight,” Maya stated.
