Ažubalis urges EU to facilitate visa regime for Belarusians

1

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis has called upon his counterparts from the EU countries to start talks on facilitation of visa regime for Belarusian citizens as soon as possible.

Making a statement in Luxemburg on April 12 at the session of the Council of the European Union on Foreign Affairs, Audronius Ažubalis noted that opening the European Union and facilitation of visa regime would be a great support for the Belarusian civil society, Radio Svaboda reports.

In connection with deterioration of the human rights situation in Belarus, possibility to use additional targeted measures for this country was discussed at the session of the Council of the European Union in Luxembourg.

According to the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, the EU has not yet used an important option and positive influence regarding Belarus – the talks on facilitation of the visa regime – and urged the ministers to start the negotiation process.

He noted that Lithuania is in favour of well-weighed actions against the repressive Belarusian regime.

“Possible measures should not worsen the situation of common citizens of Belarus,” Ažubalis said.
