Syarhei Martsaleu to celebrate 34th birthday in KGB jail

The leader of the electoral headquarters of the former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich, Syarhei Martsaleu, turns 34 on April 29.

The young politician will celebrate his birthday in the KGB remand prison. On May 11 Syarhei Martsaleu to stand trial on charges related to organizing actions blatantly violating the public order.

During the presidential election in 2010 S. Martsaleu was the campaign chief of Mikalai Statkevich. He was almost not present on Independence Square on December 19. On December 23 he was got off the train while he was on the way to Warsaw to take part in a TV programme of Belsat TV channel. He was arrested and placed to the KGB remand prison, charged with organizing mass riots. On April 4 he was freed from this charge, and it was substituted by another one, under Article 342 Part 1 of the Criminal Code (actions, blatantly violating public order).

Syarhei Martsaleu sends very few letters from “Amerikanka” prison. His grandmother Zoya Yaumenava has received only 5 letters over the period the young man’s imprisonment, as told by the common law wife of Mikalai Statkevich, Maryna Adamovich.
