Belarusian oppositionist flees to Poland from border checkpoint

Belarusian oppositionist Alyaksandr Lukin and his wife fled to Poland on Wednesday after Belarusian border guards tried to detain them at a border checkpoint in the village of Slavatychy.

As RIA Novosti informs with a link to Polish media, the Lukins were crossing the border to enter Belarus on Wednesday afternoon. Belarusian border guards tried to detained them, but the couple fled to a backroom on the territory of Poland and remain there now.

According to Polish border guards, the Lukins have two their children and a driver, a Lithuanian national, in their car in Belarus.

As media report, Lukin supports Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov.

Lukin was arrested for 10 days for taking part in an opposition demonstration on the election day in Belarus on December 19, 2010. After that he went to France. He tried to cross the Polish-Belarusian border to return home on Wednesday. Polish and Belarusian border guards are now negotiating in Slavatychy to settle the situation.
