Bulgaria stands for tough sanctions against Minsk

“Categorical pressure, sanctions, and support of the opposition” are needed.

Bulgaria insists on further applying political pressure and sanctions on Belarusian authorities to make them observe human rights, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov said.

“I think we need to use another instruments in regards to Belarus: pressure, categorical pressure, sanctions, and support of the opposition,” he told Russian journalists in Moscow on Friday, Interfax reports.

It was the minister’s answer to a question whether Bulgaria considers efficient using the tactics of “observing human rights in exchange for European loans for Belarus”.

Mladenov reminded that on May 23, the European Union took a decision to impose sanctions on a group of Belarusian judges, who conducted trials over members of the Belarusian opposition.

“We will have to return to a question of sanctions on Belarus at the next meeting,” the minister thinks.
