Forensic expert: “If you are opposition, that’s quite another thing”

On July 13 a representative of the district branch of the Conservative Christian Party Belarusian Popular Front Halina Kavalevich was detained on the square in the town of Byaroza and beaten by policemen of the District Internal Affairs Department of Byaroza.

She sent complaints to the prosecutor of the district of Byaroza Myachyslau Kurylovich, as well as to the head of the District Internal Affairs Department of Byaroza Andrei Leanyuk. Halina Kavalevich asks to recognize the actions of a policeman Yakau Samasyuk and other policemen responsible for her detention and beating, illegal and violating her rights, Vyasna human rights centre informs.

On July 13 at about 6.30 p.m. Halina Kavalevich was sitting on the bench on the square reading a newspaper. A policeman Yakau Samasyuk in mufti came up to her and demanded to show her ID. She showed her pensioner’s card, which includes all the necessary details and a photo. But it was not enough for Samasyuk. He demanded a passport, and when the woman refused to go home to bring a passport, he called in for help, and the woman was dragged into a paddy wagon. She warned that she suffers from claustrophobia. But that was ignored. 65-year-old woman was beaten, thrown into the paddy wagon and taken to the police department, where Halina Kavalevich was held for 3 hours. An administrative report about her insubordination to police was drawn up. The woman is to stand trial.

Halina Kavalevich sought medical assistance from a trauma surgeon, as her leg was injured; and also addressed a forensic expert to register injuries.

She had an interesting conversation with a forensic expert Vasily Sharou:

- So you have been on the square, haven’t you? Are you opposition?

- But what does it matter? – Halina Kavalevich said.

- If you are opposition, that’s quite another thing.

Sharou started to make a phone call, though Halina Kavalevich had a referral for a medical examination. Then he returned, held examination, but in contravention of the law did not give the results of the examination to the injured person.
