Germany condemns “blatant brutality” of Belarusian authorities

The German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, comments on arrests of participants of silent protests in Belarus.

“The blatant brutality, which Belarusian security forces have used against peaceful protests, is totally unacceptable. We demand to immediately release all political prisoners and stop political pressure,” the press service of the German Embassy in Belarus cites Westerwelle.

Dispersal of peaceful protest actions in Belarus was condemned by international human rights organizations, the US and a number of western countries. The Russian MFA also expressed its concern over “using force against peaceful demonstrators” in Belarus.

According to human rights activists, about 400 people were detained in Belarus during silent protests on July 6. A lot of them have already been tried and punished with terms of arrest and fines. Some people stand trials today.

About 1,730 persons, among them journalists, were detained in Belarus since June 8 during silent protests organized by an Internet group “Revolution by social networks”.
