Human rights activist Aleh Vouchak arrested

Vouchak is reported to have been accused of disorderly conduct. He is to be tried on Monday.

Human rights defender Aleh Vouchak was detained in the street at 3:35 pm.

Vouchak’s friends posted on Facebook a policeman came to the activist to check his ID. The human rights defender informed he was being held in the Maskouski district police department, “Nasha Niva” newspaper informs.

It’s possible that his home may be searched now. Aleh Vouchak is a Soviet-Afghan war veteran and a former prosecutor.

After resignation from prosecutor’s office, he investigated high-profiled cases of political prisoners and arrested law enforcement officers.

He actively helped Alyaksandr Kazulin and then Mikalai Autukhovich, who is also a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan war.

Activity of Vouchak repeatedly provoked angry reaction of pro-Lukashenka media. His organization “Legal Assistance to Citizens” was denied registration in 2003. The case of closing down the organization was submitted to the UN Human Rights Committee.
