German Bundestag prepares requests on NPP in Belarus

The deputies from the Green, Social Democratic and the Left parties are concerned with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus.

They are preparing requests for the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Belarus. German deputies consider that Germany should know the issues of construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and should discuss it with Belarus since Germany can suffer in case of an accident at the plant.

As the Green Party member Mariluisa Beck stated, she is preparing an official request for the Belarusian government on a number of issues related to the safety of the constructed Belarusian nuclear power plant and to the international conventions, as BelaPAN reports. According to her, this request will be sent next week.

Chairperson of the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Eva Bulling- Schröter intends to ask the German government about the participation of the state in the dialogue with Belarus on the NPP construction within the frames of the Espoo Convention.

The Bundestag deputies are not only gathering the information, they also are interested in the independent experts’ and community’s opinions. Last week they have arranged meetings with the Belarusian Anti-Nuclear Campaign Coordinator Tatiana Novikova.

According to Tatiana Novikova, it is important to know what is going on in Belarus with regard to the NPP construction not only for Germany , the information about the development of the German energetics is also important for the Belarusian society. She said that today the German energy industry is refusing the nuclear power and is moving towards new renewably technologies, which is proved by the figures.

“Over the last couple of years the share of the renewable energy in Germany amounted to about 25%, which exceeds the NPP energy share. We would like Belarus to follow Germany,” noted Tatiana Novikova.
