Polish diplomat: Dictatorship should be deprived of financing

Sanctions which are planned to be imposed by the EU, are aimed only against sponsors and henchmen of Lukashenka’s regime.

It has been stated by Marek Nowakowski, Ambassador of Poland to Latvia, in an interview to Latvijas Avize newspaper.

“In the case of Belarus, it is not about economic sanctions, but about Lukashenka’s regime, and it is a response to the repressions against the opposition. The sanctions planned by the EU are only against sponsors of the regime. The problem is that a group of businessmen have gathered around the president and support his regime”, – Nowakowski explained.

Marek Nowakowski stressed that the most effective way to influence undemocratic regimes is to take away their sponsors.

At the same time, Europe is ready to offer cooperation to Belarus, including the financial sphere, under the condition that democratic standards are observed. The Eastern Partnership could be used for that.

We remind that the issue of expanding sanctions against Lukashenka’s regime is to be considered by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU in the end of March.
