Minsk dweller raised national flag on October Square (Photo)

An opposition activist unfurled a national white-red-white flag in Minsk centre.

Opposition activist Nina Bahinskaya, a pensioner from Minsk, held a one-person protest action on October Square on the evening of June 18. She walked through the square with a national white-red-white flag. The woman managed to walk from the Trade Union Culture Centre to the zero kilometre monument, where she was met by two riot policemen in mufti.

The policemen tried to snatch the flag out of her hands, but she did not allowed. They then asked her to hide the flag and go away.

The riot policemen opted not to detain 67-year-old Nina Bahinskaya. As the woman told charter97.org website, she decided to raise the flag in solidarity with activist of European Belarus civil campaign Andrei Molchan, who had been beaten brutally by police for a similar action in Uruchcha city district. Nina Bahinskaya also noted the post-election rally of December 19 was suppressed 18 months ago.
