Stanislau Shushkevich: “Belarus will take a rightful place in Europe”

The Supreme Council of the Belarusian Soviet Republic adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty on July 27, 1990.

The document became the first step towards the independence of Belarus, Radio Svaboda reports.

“The ideas were mostly implemented. Legally, we have independence. For me personally, July 27 is a holiday. We used the proposal made by the way by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus and the drafts prepared by the Belarusian National Front and created two commissions. We prepared the text of the Declaration on Independence and adopted it on July 27. In my view, it is a perfect document that proclaims independence. We in fact approved main provisions and laid the ground for creating a good constitution. It was a shoot forward, but later we saw a roll back.

I think if we managed to proclaim independence on July 27 22 years ago, we will return to our national white-red-white flag, Chase court of arms, respect for the Belarusian language and will take a rightful place in Europe.”
