Police and Ministry of Justice don’t disclose reasons of the ”technical failure”

Another court session on the lawsuit of chair of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Aleg Gulak against the Interior Ministry and Ministry of Justice took place in the Central district court in Minsk.

The human rights activist claims that these institutions deprived him of his constitutional right to leave the country for about five months, and demands from the court to acknowledge this fact, Radio Svaboda reports. The Interior Ministry has admitted that Aleg Gulak’s name was included to the list of the citizens who cannot leave the country “because of a technical failure”, and that it was taken away from the list on 20 July, but no reasons for the failure were disclosed. The representative of the Ministry of Justice did not explain what had been done to check Aleg Gulak’s complain launched after he found out he couldn’t travel abroad. Judge Alena Siamak works with the law suit. On 31 July the parties presented their statements and the court began consideration of the case. The court accepted Aleg Gulak’s appeal and demanded that the Interior Ministry and Ministry of Justice submit a number of documents that clarify what happened after the complain had been launched. The court will resume at 15:30 on 1 August.
