6

American missioner Ruth Waller saved three boys who were drowning in a lake in Minsk.

A new Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the United States in Belarus, Ethan A. Goldrich, laid flowers on the grave of Ruth Waller at the Military Cemetery in Minsk, Nasha Niva newspaper reports.

Ruth Waller and her husband were members of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration’s mission  (UNNRA) in Minsk after the World War II. Ruth, 25, saved three drowning Belarusian boys. She caught pneumonia and meningitis and died on August 4, 1946.

A special section devoted to Ruth Waller was created in the Great Patriotic War Museum in a exhibition on occasion of the 60th anniversary of the UNNRA mission in Belarus.

The UNNRA was founded in November 1943 by Allies of the World War II to provide relief and economic assistance to the countries that had suffered from the war.
