The arms shipments to Syria were not a secret for the United States.
The military experts believe that the US authorities made the official Minsk realize they are completely aware of the illegal shipments of military equipment to Syria, where the civil war in the full play, the “Voice of America” report.
A military analyst Aliaksandr Golts doesn’t consider the sanctions imposed on Belarus and Syria to be something out of bounds. According to him the US from time to time impose sanctions on various companies and businesses, which operate against the American laws.
It’s necessary to note, that "Belvneshpromservice" was already sanctioned by another American agency. In 2004 the US Department of State accused the Belarusian enterprise of illegal shipments of military technologies to Iran, which could had been used for creating weapons of mass destruction.
In both cases the Belarusian regime was a subject of a thorough analysis for international intelligence agencies in the years 2011-12 – first of all because of the attention of the international community was all concentrated on a rigid civil conflict in Syria.
“The starting point for investigation in this case was not Belarus, but Syria, - an analyst of the International Peace Research Institute Pavel Baev pointed out. – When a confict, similar to the Syrian one, lasts for so long, it inevitably becomes the focus of attention. All the arms shipments get into the scope of the centered interest of all the parties interested”.
Baev believes, that the official Damascus is thoroughly controlled because of the international resonance over the situation in Syria, as long as it goes about arms and military equipment procurements. In such cases, the expert asserts, details of illegal deals pop up, which the international community could even think of.
The analyst considers that during one of the questioning of former Syrian military men the links with Belarus came out.
“After that, apparently, they started to verify the information and found something”, - the expert thinks. The Lukashenka regime’s reputation at the international arena is seriously blotted, the expert stressed, that’s why there would be not many of those willing to stand up for Belarus.
We would remind you that on September 19th The Treasury Department of the US issued a press-statement which stated that the American government imposed sanctions on "Belvneshpromservice" for its connections to the Syrian Bureau of army provision, which is a part of the country’s Defense Ministry and is responsible for arms procurement.
