Lithuania "will not rush" with the extradition of Belarus fugitive Sergeant

This was said by the minister of internal affairs Artūras Melianas.

According to him, at the present time the Belarusian is at the Foreigners Registration Centre. Minister promises to ask why he had not been granted asylum, writes ru.delfi.lt.

"I think we really should ask why he had not been granted asylum. According to my information, the decision to grant asylum was challenged in court - so I think that a normal process, in accordance with law, should be initiated",- said to journalists on Tuesday Artūras Melianas.

"But in this case we will not in any case hurry to extradite this man to Belarus", - added he.

As the website charter97.org previously reported, Lithuanian Prosecutor General's Office has confirmed that Belarus had sent several letters about the provision of legal assistance in connection with Zakharchenka’s case, one of which was received in the previous year.

Prosecutor General's Office does not comment the details of the appeals, because, according to its representative Rita Stundene, "These documents are only for law enforcement structures"

A year ago a sergeant of the range reconnaissance company of Defense Ministry special forces’  fled from beatings and abuse of superior officers and miraculously made it to safe Vilnius.
