Maidan supports Belarusian political prisoners (Video)

A picket of solidarity with Ukrainian and Belarusian political prisoners was held on Wednesday in Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv on occasion of the Day of Political Prisoners.

After the picket organised by the Ukrainian Committee for the release of political prisoners and the Belarusian movement Razam activists handed in an appeal to the EU Delegation to Ukraine asking to help release all political prisoners in Ukraine and Belarus, RIA Novosti-Ukraine reports.

Ukrainian activists offered to collect signatures for holding a referendum on European integration in Ukraine.

The Day of Political Prisoners (Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions) is marked annually to pay tribute to the memory of victims of political repressions. The tradition to mark this day appeared on October 30, 1974, on the initiative of Kronid Lyubarski, a Soviet human rights defender and a political prisoner.
