Harry Pahaniajla: Authorities ignore UN’s decisions

Belarusian authorities have not fulfilled any of the UN Human Rights Committee’s decisions.

The head of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee’s juridical commission Harry Pahaniajla stated that when commenting on the recent report on the violations of human rights in the world, delivered by the Belarusian MFA, Euroradio reports.

Human rights are violated everywhere, where there are clashes of interests between a citizen and a state, the human rights activist says. In the countries of Europe such cases are examined by various agencies, courts deal with citizens’ complaints, it is all made public. Belarusian authorities, on the contrary, ignore the decisions of international organizations, including the UN, which deal with human rights observance.

“Citizens of the countries, which are the members of the Council of Europe, appeal to the European Court in Human Rights in Strasbourg and, by the way, often win the cases. The Belarusian MFA uses the practice of exactly these trials in their report. But the MFA did not mention that the citizens of Belarus have a similar right in the UN’s Human Rights Committee. There are already more than 20 decisions, confirming the violation of the rights of citizens by the Republic of Belarus, but not a single one of them was followed”, - Harry Pahaniajla stated.

It is the first time that Belarus prepared such a report. Russia, China and the USA also prepare similar reports. It is not ruled out that the new Foreign Minister has decided to take an attacking position, Pahaniajla thinks. A human rights activist Uladzimir Labkovich agrees with him, since the report of the Belarusian MFA resembles the Russian one very much in terms of the structure and the orientation.

“Unfortunately, those are not single cases of human rights violations in Belarus, that the MFA exposed in their report, but systematic ones. I think, the new Minister has borrowed such a know-how from Russia, when you cannot respond to claims, you go for the “you are a fool yourself” level of rhetoric”, - Uladzimir Labkovich said.

We would remind that several days ago the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei presented a MFA’s report, telling about the violations of human rights in 23 Western countries.
