Stanislau Shushkevich: This so called dialogue will lead to complete standstill in Belarus

It has not been decided yet who will represent Belarus at the Eastern Partnership summit scheduled for autumn 2013 in Lithuania.

This statement was made by Lithuanian Ambassador to Minsk Evaldas Ignatavicius. “It will be a common decision of the EU. It is being discussed now,” the diplomat said.

Stanislau Shushkevich, the first head of independent Belarus, talked to Radio Racyja about a possible participation of official Minsk's representative in the summit and noted that “the so called dialogue between Minsk and Brussels will lead to a complete standstill in Belarus”.

“They in fact began to trade while political prisoners are in jails and the authorities have them by the throat. They forgot what mission they have in democratic Belarus. They do nothing for that. The West found support of their approaches, because the policy of isolation appeared to be ineffective and they think these changes can improve the situation. I am absolutely convinced that they will worsen the situation and we will see again the rule of obscurantism that has been continuing for many years,” Shushkevich said.
