Activists, detained on Freedom Day, to appeal against court decisions

The activists, who were detained after a rally on Freedom Day, have appealed against  decisions of Minsk's Savetski district court.

Charter97.org website has learnt it form Aleh Rahouski, an activist of European Belarus civil campaign.

“The young people, who were detained after the Freedom Day rally, have appealed against decisions of judges of Minsk's Savetski district court. The court hearing is scheduled for 15:00 on April 19 in the Minsk city court. Aliaksandr Kavalou, Aleh Astashonak and I received summonses. I don't know if others received them,” the  activist said.

He added that all above mentioned participants of the rally received fined of 30 and 40 penalty units (3 and 4 million Belarusian rubles respectively).

“We don't hope the decision of the Minks city court will be in our favour. But we should appeal against unfair court decisions. The detained activists did not violate the law and did not admit their guilt at the trial,” Aleh Rahouski said.

It should be reminded that a few participants of the Freedom Day rally, including three Ukrainian citizens, were detained in Minsk on March 24.

Police made reports against all of them for violating article 23.34 (violating the rules of holding a mass event).

The activists were thrown into a detention centre or fined.
