New provocations against Mikalaj Statkievich

A new wave of pressure on a political prisoner Mikalaj Statkievich has started.

The politician’s wife Maryna Adamovich received information about that, Radio Racyja reports.

“I have information that after a short break another set of provocations has started against Mikalaj Statkievich in the prison number 4 in Mahilou. To my knowledge, to provocations were attempted against him in the cell last Sunday. Unfortunately, I do not know the specifics yet”, - the political prisoner’s spouse said.

According to her, even in the tough prison conditions Mikalaj Statkievich does not lose the spirit, keeps analyzing the current situation as well as the past of Belarus. According to Maryna Adamovich, he sent as essay, in which he discusses the national idea. This work will be published at the politician’s personal web-site shortly.

Mikalaj Statkievich was one of the presidential candidates in 2010. He was arrested after a mass demonstration against the rigged elections results. More than 700 participants of the manifestation were arrested that day, including presidential candidates Andrej Sannikau, Uladzimir Niaklaeu, Ales Michalevic and their team members.

On 26 May 2011 the politician was sentenced to 6 year in high security penal colony by the court of Minsk’s Partisan district.

According to a court’s decision as of 12 January 2012 the imprisonment conditions have been toughened, and Statkievich has been transferred from the colony number 17 in Shklou to the prison number 4 in Mahilou.

Statkievich is often punished with a penal cell, the political prisoner is limited in the number of parcels he is allowed to receive and meeting with relatives, by the order of the authorities provocations are made against him.
