Yaromenak thrown into jail ahead of Chernobyl Way rally

A young activist was sentenced in absentia to 15 days in custody.

The decision was delivered by judge Yury Harabtouski from Minsk's Pershamaiski district court on April 18. Uladzimir Yaromenak was sentenced to 15 days in custody for alleged violation of the rules of preventive surveillance. According to the judge, the former political prisoner was not at home on the night of February 24, charter97.org learnt from an activist of the European Belarus campaign Valiantina Tsiurava.

The Young Front activist received yesterday a telephone call from a district police officer, who offered him to visit a police station. He said to the young man that he had to go to a detention facility for 15 days.

It should be reminded that Young Front member Uladzimir Yaromenak was arrested  in January 15 in the so called case  of “mass disorders”. He was given a 3-year sentence. He had served his term in Vitebsk and was pardoned in August 2011. Since the release, he was thrown into custody several times for administrative cases.

The former political prisoner was put under a year's preventive surveillance on March 15, 2012. The term of surveillance was extended for six more months on March 15, 2013.

He must appear in the police department on call and give explanations regarding observing the rules of the surveillance, warn the police about a new place of employment and residence and leave the district (city) only with the consent of the police. Police officers have the right to visit him at home at any time. A criminal case may be opened after three violations of the rules.
