Kavalyou relatives demand to inform them about his burial site

The mother and the sister of Uladzislau Kavalyou, one of the men executed over the Minsk metro bombing, ask to give them information about his burial site.

As BelaPAN news agency learnt from human rights defender Raman Kisliak, the relative appeal was sent by Lyubou Kavalyova and Tatsiana Kaziar to Lukashenka, the KGB chief and the chief of the department of corrections on April 25.

According to the human rights activist, Uladzislau Kavalyou's mother and sister refer to the decision of the UN Human Rights Committee, which considered their complaint.

The committee noted that keeping the burial site secret was intimidation and punishment of the family by holding them in a state of uncertainty and causing distress.

Kisliak noted the UN Human Rights Committee urged the Belarusian authorities to inform Uladzislau Kavalyou's mother and sister about his burial site, publish this decision in the media and take measures to prevent similar violations in future.

“The practice of keeping burial sites of executed people secret from their families goes beyond common sense. I don't see any reasonable grounds for such attitude towards families of the executed people,” the human rights activist said.
