This is how a coordinator of the European Belarus civic campaign Viktar Ivashkievich commented for the charter97.org web-site on some Lukashenka’s statements that he made to journalists.

“The idea of the dialogue was voiced by Aliaksandr Milinkievich, Uladzimir Niaklaeu and Aliaksej Janukievich, and also the representatives of some European structures. Due to today’s statement by Lukashenka that there will be no release of political prisoners, the response of the three must come. It should be in the theme of “We hoped that such a step would lead to the release of political prisoners, but now we are against the dialogue”. If they remain silent, then they agree to the dialogue without the release”, - the politician believes.

Ivashkievich also expressed an opinion on Lukashenka’s statement that Belarusian army needs 20 new planes.

“It is a property of any dictator to see himself as a Napoleon. Hence the dressing up as a generalissimo, planes and soldiers games. And these games take money from the budget, which could have been used for education and health care”, - the European Belarus’ coordinator is convinced.

He noted that some part these planes may be sold to other countries.

“Belarus acts as an intermediary of the Russian military industry complex for selling arms to the states, where Russia cannot openly send weapons due to diplomatic and political reasons. This happened before too”, - the politician is sure.

He emphasized that the deployment of a Russian military base in Belarus is the continuation of Russia’ imperial policy and the process of so-called integration.

“Today the real integration of the Belarusian regime with the Russian one is happening exactly in the military sphere. Lukashenka is afraid that he will be overthrown by the agents of the West that is why this base and twenty new planes look like a protection to him, and also the satisfaction of psychological complexes. This is to show NATO “Do not touch me, we have with what to response”. The dictator hopes that the presence of large number of military equipment and multiple army will save him from a political collapse”, - Viktar Ivashkievich summarized.
