UN special rapporteurs informed about closing Good Will organisation

Human rights activists told Miklos Haraszti and Maina Kiai about the situation of NGOs in Belarus.

Legal Transformation Center Lawtrend asks UN special rapporteurs on human rights and freedom of assembly and association to interfere with the situation of freedom of association in Belarus.

Human rights activists turn attention to closing the association Good Will (Dobraya Volya). They think dissolution of the NGO as a measure of punishment is “disproportionate to violations of legislation committed by the organisation”.

“We urge the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, Miklos Haraszti, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, to take possible actions within their mandates including but not limited to the following:

1. Turn attention to the unproportionate use of sanctions in relation to Belarusian NGOs, in particular Good Will NGO;

2. Continue contacts with the Belarusian government on simplification of registration procedures for NGOs, reducing grounds for their liquidation and other issues of legal regulation of NGOs' activity;

3. Continue to insist on sending the invitation of the government to visit Belarus to thoroughly study, in particular, the situation of freedom of associations,” the appeal says.
