Swedish Charge d'Affaires to arrive in Minsk

Carl Bildt has announced that the Swedish Embassy in Belarus will soon resume its work.

The minister of foreign affairs of Sweden informed about it on his Twitter account.

“After some difficulties, we will soon send a chargé back to run our Embassy in Minsk in Belarus. Good for everyone,” Carl Bildt wrote.

The Swedish Embassy in Minsk was closed after Swedish citizens had organised an unsanctioned flight to Belarus with a free speech performance.

The Belarusian authorities informed Sweden on August 1, 2012, that the accreditation of ambassador Stefan Eriksson would not be prolonged. The diplomat was accused of carrying out destructive activities.

The Swedish authorities said in response that Belarus's new ambassador would not be allowed to take up his post and recommended two officers of the Belarusian embassy to leave Stockholm.

On August 8, the Belarusian MFA recalled the staff of the country's embassy in Stockholm. Sweden was recommended to take the same measures and recall all country's diplomats from Minsk.
