UN Council will decide on the Special Rapporteur on Belarus

Belarusian UN rapporteur’s mandate to be put to the vote in Geneva today.

The issue of prolonging the mandate of UN special rapporteur Miklós Haraszti will be put to the vote on June 13.

He was appointed rapporteur on the human rights situation in Belarus.

Delegations of all the 47 member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council can take part in the voting.

Valyantsin Stefanovich expressed a hope that the majority of the delegations would vote to prolong the mandate of the special rapporteur on Belarus, Radio Liberty reports. The countries that have already supported the official Belarusian delegation (Russia, China and Cuba) are not members of the Council at the moment.

Belarus does not recognize the special rapporteur mandate. The official Minsk does not cooperate with Haraszti and he has no visa.
