Stanislau Shushkievich: EU must deal with dictator like USA

Unlike the European Union, the United Stated of America has a firm and coherent policy towards the Lukashenka regime.

The first head of independent Belarus Stanislau Shushkievich shared such an opinion with the charter97.org, when commenting on the prolongation of sanctions against Lukashenka and his entourage by the USA.

“The USA is, fortunately, taking a reasonable and coherent policy, and Europe keeps fussing. This is due to a large confusion. I have just returned from Vilnius, where we discussed these problems at a round table. Unfortunately, there is a large number of people, including among our former Soviet Union neighbors, who realize very bad what is going on in Belarus, and who have forgotten, what was there is their countries. Moreover, they act as reporters on Belarusian issues. In fact, they contribute to the consolidation of the dictatorship”, - the politician believes.

He highlighted that the worst thing is that in Belarus we have so-called oppositionists, who support such an approach.

“We all together agreed that there will be no steps without the release and full exoneration of political prisoners. And they betray, because they cannot do anything but grantsucking. These people aim to get Western grants and then do nothing with them apart from consuming these assets. This was very well voiced at the conference. Certain people, who have never done anything in their lives, open their offices in one, two, three towns and tell about the representation of some institutions, but there are no institutions”, - Stanislau Shushkievich claimed.

He is convinced that Europe is focused on the wrong people.

“At the round table we said that when there was Poland’s assistance, everyone focused on authoritative people, but not artificial institutions. And many of such institutions were created by our KGB, and Europa focuses on them and listens to them. It is good that the United States stick to a coherent and normal policy. I am glad about that. I do not always like Americans, but they do not fuss, and it is certain, and Europe does. In 2006 it, so to say, betrayed our position, having said that it will not put forward any conditions for Lukashenka to follow, and now it is again starting to surrender bit by bit, because it does not know what to do”, - the politicians highlighted.
