Vital Rymasheuski: EU shouldn't buy into Lukashenka's games

The statement of the head of state on establishing normal relations with the EU was made to fool Europe and receive anotherloan.

Vital Rymasheuski, a co-head of the organising committee to create the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, spoke to charter97.org about Lukashenka's remark on the intention to improve relations with the West.

“This is an old game with the European Union called 'give us money for independence'. In reality, he asks money not for the independence from Russia, but for the independence from the people of Belarus. Frankly speaking, I don't want the EU to get involved into this game. Lukashenka sells plants to Russia and political prisoners to the West. This trade must be stopped. These statements are made in the hope that Europe will buy into it and the game will go on,” the politician noted.

He thinks it may be a “reset” and an attempt of a new dialogue with the Belarusian regime.

“This is not a one-time process. The preparations took the last few years, even the last few months. Perhaps there are certain arrangements with some EU politicians that give Lukashenka grounds to make such statements. It's possible that the Belarusian ruler knows about promises of closer ties with the West in the nearest time and understands that he won't be mistaken to make such remarks and Europe will make some proposals and steps to the dialogue. In principle, this statement is not spontaneous. Being prepared beforehand, it complies with the strategy of the so called reset and a new dialogue with the regime,” Vital Rymasheuski sums up.

The Belarusian dictator has meet with chair of the Russian State Duma Sergei Naryshkin today.

Lukashenka said at the meeting that normal relations with the European Union must be established.
