Ukraine bans import of Belarusian pork

Ukraine introduced a temporary ban on the import of pork and live hogs from Belarus on June 22, one day after the Belarusian authorities confirmed a case of African swine fever in the Hrodna region.

Ukraine’s veterinary service said that the import ban would also apply to hog feeds.

On June 21, the Belarusian State Veterinary Center said that a hog in a village in the Iwye district had been found to have succumbed to the deadly virus. The hog belonged to a village resident.

The statement was made hours after Russia announced that a case of African swine fever had been registered in Belarus and it was imposing a ban on the import of pork and live hogs from the Hrodna region.

News websites reported earlier this month that hogs had been culled by veterinary workers in the Minsk and Vitsyebsk regions. In April, as many as 20,000 hogs were said to have been slaughtered at a large state-owned farm in the Brest region.
