77 killed as high-speed train derails in Spain

17

143 people have been injured, RIA Novosti reports referring to France-Presse.

The previously announced number of victims was 60.

A passenger train derailed not far from Santiago de Compostela. All the 13 carriages turned over, the last but one was destroyed.

There were 218 passengers on board.

Some carriages have not been fully searched yet, a representative of the Spanish court said.

The high speed of the train is among the possible reasons for the catastrophe. The train’s speed was 220 km/h instead of the allowed 80 km/h, unofficial sources report.
