Egyptian President is arrested

Mohamed Morsi was first ousted and then taken into custody.

Official representatives of the Muslim Brothers movement which support Morsi have come up with the statement about the President's arrest at night on July 4, informs lenta.ru. According to the movement's representative, Morsi's advisor Essam El-Haddad was also arrested.

The sources in the law-enforcement agencies of Egypt have confirmed the information about Morsi's arrest. According to their information, he is at the Republican guard headquarters.

On July 3, Egypt's Minister of Defense Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi told the country in a TV speech that Morsi had been ousted and was no longer a President. The armed forces interfered into the political crisis in Egypt after the mass protest actions on June 30, the participants of which demanded that Morsi should resign. Morsi refused to leave the position voluntarily. The army demanded that the President and the opposition should elaborate a joint plan on how to overcome the crisis, but the parties failed to find consensus before due date.

After the TV speech of the Minister of Defense was on air, Morsi stated that he was still a legal President and urged the citizens to defend the legitimacy of his powers. The Muslim Brothers have already called the situation a military turnover.
