Mikalaj Statkievich has turned 57

The politician has been in prison for over two and a half years.

Mikalaj Statkievich’s spouse Maryna Adamovich told the charter97.org web-site about how they used to celebrate her husband’s birthday when he was at large.

“We always celebrated this day together. Sometimes with his friends. Often it involved several stages – us together and in a wider circle. We would usually gather somewhere in the city in a café or our friends’ suburban houses”, - she said.

Maryna Adamovich has also told what her husband is doing now in prison and about the conditions he is currently in.

“Apart from the usual “everything is ok” he does not tell anything about the detention conditions in his letters. He usually does not complain about anything. He has been recently moved from the investigation building to the prison one. A sitting of a commission took place in July, which has relieved him from the status of a malicious regime violator. For this reason he now has the right to purchase things for 200 thousand roubles, not 100 like before. So far this is the only improvement.

As to what he is doing in prison, then he does sports, reads books, studies English – to the extent that it is possible in the conditions he is in”, - she said.

The political prisoner’s spouse told how she had managed to congratulate him last year.

“There is a radio in his cell, which turns on at a certain time. There are radio programs, in which people can send congratulations. However now I did not manage to congratulate him this way”, - Maryna Adamovich told. She added that the main wish on the husband’s birthday was the one of his sooner release.

The charter97.org joins the congratulations and wishes Mikalaj Statkievich a sooner release.
