Belarus victorious against Hungary in European Basketball Championship qualifier

The Belarusian national basketball team have won against Hungary in the penultimate matchday of the FIBA European Basketball Championship qualification.

In Hungary’s Kecskemet manager Ruslan Baidakov’s Belarus overpowered their rivals in the competition for the first place in qualifying Group D 63:61. Belarus’ Vitaly Lyutych and Artyom Parakhovsky top-scored with 17 and 12 points respectively, while Alexander Kudryavtsev earned 11 points.

Earlier in this qualifying tournament Belarus saw off Hungary at home 79:75 and lost the second game lost to Slovakia 85:97.

Belarus will play the ultimate qualifying game in Group D against Slovakia at the Palace of Sport in Belarus’ capital Minsk on 16 August. If Ruslan Baidakov’s side win they will enter the next stage of the qualifying tournament.

The tournament table in Group D looks as follows:

1. Belarus - 5 points (3 games)

2. Hungary - 4 (3)

3. Slovakia - 3 (2).

The Belarusian national women’s basketball team continue their campaign at the U16 European Championship Division B in Portugal. Belarus could only fight for the 7th place after losing to Poland 65:63 on 10 August. The 11 August game against England, however, brought the Belarusians another defeat, this time the scoreline at full time reading 46:47. In the final overall table of the tournament Belarus are 8th.

At the U16 European Championship Division B for boys Belarus have been unlucky so far as they lost all four matches of the competition. Their results are as follows:

vs. Austria 51:66 (8 August)

vs. Luxembourg 61:67 (9 August)

vs. the Czech Republic 59:87 (10 August)

vs. Georgia 66:74 (11 August).
