MEPs refuse to visit Belarus

A visit of members of the European Parliament planned earlier has been postponed for an indefinite period.

Radio Racyaja has learnt it from MEP Marek Migalski.

A delegation was to visit Minsk in summer 2013. Members of the delegation wanted to visit political prisoners in jails and meet with their families.

“We'll return to the matter in September, after the holidays,” the politician said. “The visit to Belarus was postponed because the Belarusian side set unacceptable conditions for the European side.”

The last MEP who paid an official visit to Minsk was EP's rapporteur on Belarus Justas Paleckis. The politician made a special report following the trip. The MEP's visit to Minsk and his talks with the Belarusian authorities were criticised both by opposition and relatives of political prisoners.
