Drunken BRSM activist with axe goes on rampage in centre of Cherven town

Yauheny Haurylchyk behaved violently after drinking and broke lanterns in the square in the town of Cherven.

The young man, an employee of the psychoneurological hospital and member of the pro-Lukashenka youth organisation BRSM, has recently received a letter of commendation from the BRSM regional committee for his contribution to the work of the volunteer youth camp “Veliky Istok”. Anastasia Sasunkevich, the first secretary of the BRSM district committee, wrote in a local newspaper that the organisation was proud of the wonderful young people actively involved in public, youth and sports activities in the district.

Two weeks after the letter of commendation was handed in, Yauheny Haurylchyk became a hero of the article in “Rayonny Vestnik” newspaper.

“He and his friend, both drunken, found themselves in the town's central square. They noticed street lanterns, ordinary round lanterns on the lawn. They were not working, because it was 3 p.m.,” the newspaper writes. Yauheny attacked the lanterns and began to smash them down. The young man had already broken two lanterns when officer of the Investigation Committee Dzmitry Shchurevich noticed the hooligan, stopped him and called the police. Yauheny's companion, who didn't joined his friend, will be involved in the case as a witness.

The newspaper writes the hooligan had an axe in his hands.

Police inspector Vitaly Sauko thinks the man must be punished severely: “He must know that he will not go unpunished. And other people must see it too. If you ask me why young people break fences and smash down lanterns I answer that the reason is lack of breeding on all levels from nursery schools to work.”

Yauheny Haurylchyk will be tried under article 339 (disorderly conduct).
