Azarenka cruises into US Open second round

Second-seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over 99th-ranked Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany in the US Open first round on 27 August.

Up next for her is 323rd-ranked Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, winner against Vesna Dolonc of Serbia a 7-5, 7-6 (5). In career head-to-head meetings, Azarenka holds a 3-1 edge over Wozniak. They last played at Roland Garros a year ago, with Victoria winning 6-4, 6-4.

This is the eighth US Open for Victoria Azarenka. Last year she was U.S. Open runner-up to Serena Williams. This season Victoria Azarenka won Australian Open, and then two more titles in Doha (Qatar) and Cincinnati (United States). During the professional career Victoria has bagged 17 titles.

Another Belarusian Olga Govortsova (88) fell to fifth-seed Na Li of China in two sets 2-6, 2-6. Olga Govortsova will continue her U.S. Open campaign in the women’s doubles. Together with Mandy Minella of Luxemburg she will play the German-Czech team of Julia Goerges and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who are seeded 12th.

In the men's doubles Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Romanian Horia Tecau, 13th seeds, will take on Horacio Zeballos of Argentina and Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in the first round. Max Mirnyi has twice won the US Open doubles. In 2000 Max Mirnyi and Australian Lleyton Hewitt became the first unseeded team to capture the U.S. Open men's doubles. Two years later Max Mirnyi and his doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi of India took another US Open doubles title. All in all, Max Mirnyi has won 47 major ATP tournaments.
