Azarenka into U.S. Open quarterfinal

Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka has advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinal at the U.S. Open which is underway in New York.

In the last match of round 4 the Belarusian, world No. 2, overpowered Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic (15) in a tough tie 4:6, 6:3, 6:4 in two hours and ten minutes. Victoria Azarenka began the match in disappointing fashion. When she was trailing 1:4 in the first set she managed to almost catch up with the Serbian and made it 4:5. However, Victoria Azarenka succumbed to a 4:6 defeat in set 1.

In the second set both players had good chances after breaking each other but Victoria Azarenka was luckier and won 6:3. Ana Ivanovic put up a good performance in the final set and saved several match points. Nevertheless, the Belarusian managed to keep the match in control and finally got a hard-earned 6:4 victory in the third set to advance to the quarterfinal where she will take on Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova (48).

In the quarterfinal match of the mixed doubles Belarus’ Max Mirnyi and Czechia’s Andrea Hlavackova overpowered another international duo of Czechia’s Kveta Peschke and Poland’s Marcin Matkowski (seeded fourth) 6:1, 6:2. In the semifinal Max Mirnyi and Andrea Hlavackova will face Kristina Mladenovic of France and Daniel Nestor of Canada.
