Grzegorz Schetyna: Poland should be involved in negotiations on Ukraine

The Polish foreign minister insists that his country should be involved in talks over Ukraine.

Grzegorz Schetyna said it in an interview with Polskie Radio.

The talks between Russia and Ukraine involving Germany and France are scheduled for Milan at the end of the week. Asked what Poland would do to participate in the talks, Grzegorz Schetyna said the country had a chance.

“I don't imagine that Ewa Kopacz won't take part in the talks over Ukraine in Milan,” he said. The Polish diplomat noted that Poland wanted to have influence on the Russian-Ukrainian relations and help to solve the conflict similar to what former foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorksi had been doing.

Asked if he talked on the issue to Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin, Schetyna stressed that the question on Poland's involvement in the talks would be solved on the presidential level.

“Kyiv wants to build safe relations with Russia. This is the key issue. There must be countries that could guarantee the openness and safety. Poland is one of these countries. It knows the history of the conflict and has been monitoring the conflict from the very beginning,” Schetyna said. “Ukraine is looking for ways out of the conflict and countries of the free world that could be involved in the process. I think it knows too that it is necessary to engage Poland in the solution to the conflict.”
