Interior Ministry knows who can be classified as “spongers”

Those found “spongers” will be arrested and made to work.

The definition “sponger” can be applied to those who intentionally avoid paying taxes, duties and other payments.

Charter97.org learnt it from the press service of the Interior Ministry.

The ministry proposes to fine adults of working age who reside in Belarus who don't pay taxes, duties and other payments for more than 6 months.

“Persistent dodgers will be arrested and made to work,” the press release reads.

The Interior Ministry wants amendments to legislation that would allow tax bodies to make reports on spongers. Such cases should be heard by district and city courts.

The ministry refers to article 56 of the Constitution: “Citizens of the Republic of Belarus shall contribute towards the funding of public expenditure through the payment of state taxes, dues and other payments.”
