Rada member Ihor Huz: We must help Belarusians to make their country democratic

A support group for Belarus will be formed in the Ukrainian parliament.

Ihor Huz, a deputy head of the Volyn regional council, a People's Front member who won the election in a first-past-the-post constituency, said it in an interview with Radio Svaboda.

– I think the new composition of the Verkhovna Rada is much better than the previous one. The Opposition Bloc, about 30 out of 423 MPs, is the only anti-Ukrainian force in the parliament. The rest political forces actually have the common platform: a democratic pro-European Ukraine, joining NATO, etc. There are many people in the Rada that took part in combat action. They fought in Donbas, Azov, Aidar battalions and other military units. The parliament has more young people, more creative people, fewer oligarchs and party functionaries.

– What main tasks does the new Ukrainian parliament have?

– The first one is,of course, the localisation of the conflict in the east. This is problem number one for all people of Ukraine. The war should be ended. The second issue is the economic crisis. We have a very unstable situation, the growth of dollar rate against the hryvnia, the growth of oil prices, etc. The third issue is the consolidation of the nation and the political forces sharing the common platform.

– How can the problem of the Donbas war be solved?

– All understand that two solutions are possible: either combat action or peace talks. The current variant is somewhere in the middle. We have a truce, but Russian troops and separatist terrorist groups do not observe it. I think we should try to achieve some result through peace talks.

– How do you see the relations between Ukraine and Belarus? Ukraine chose a democratic path to Europe, while Belarus moves to the Eurasian Union...

– All understand that in this political struggle Lukashenka is interesting for us a buffer between our country and the Russian Federation. Ukrainian leaders (the president, prime minister and Verkhovna Rada speaker) will undoubtedly look for approaches to Aliaksandr Lukashenka, because we don't want the front to be in the north, on the border with Belarus, in addition to what we have in the east, in Luhansk and Donetsk region.

This is what concerns the country's leaders. My position has remained unchanged since 2005, when the Lukashenka regime threw my colleagues and me into jail for 10 days. Lukashenka is a dictator who continues to kill, who acts like Gaddafi and Husein, who removes his opponents, who does not understand what is democracy and European election. This is my position. I will do my best in the Verkhovna Rada to support Belarusian opposition at the national level. I think we will form a group of MPs that share these views. We have many plans. I think opposition representatives will be received in the Verkhovna Rada at the highest level because we should help the Belarusians to make their country democratic.

– Will you continue to work with the Pahonia squad after you have become an MP?

– Surely, yes. I don't see any problems here. We will help the Pahonia squad and look for opportunities to support Belarusian guys and do everything for them not to be caught by the KGB. If there are any volunteers, we will do our best to have them here. I think it is right for Ukraine ideologically, politically and geopolitically.

– How does the Pahonia squad live today? Do fighters remain at the front?

– A few fighters remain at the front now. Most left for the EU, where they live or study. Some of them are in western Ukraine. As you understand, we don't have combat operations now.
