Pavlo Klimkin: Association with EU without joining NATO is not a way out for Ukraine

None of the international organisation, in which Ukraine is involved, defends its position on Crimea in the full.

Such a statement has been made at the third annual The Tiger Conference in Kyiv, said Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, “Ukrinform” reports.

“Despite of the fact that we have the SMM [the Special Monitoring mission of the OSCE in Ukraine], the OSCE is involved… however we do not have a single international organisation which is ready to defend our position in order to return the situation to the status quo,” Klimkin said.

In this context, according to the minister, it is important for Ukraine to be able to become irreplaceable in its region through regional associations, European integration and participation in all kind of global organisations.

According to Klimkin, “Finlandization” which would include political and economic association with the EU without joining the NATO, is not an answer for Ukraine. As noted by the minister, reforms in the sectors of security and defense become important in this issue, as well as a comprehensive program of reforms, which would allow Ukraine to overcome today’s challenges.

“My aspiration concerning Ukraine is to turn it into a real European player with global ambitions,” Klimkin added.
