Angela Merkel: New sanctions against Russia are inevitable

Sanctions against Russia should remain.

It is possible to cancel sanctions only when Moscow make enough efforts to reconcile conflict in Ukraine, intends the head of the German government. The Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed confidence that new economic sanctions against Russia would be inevitable while Russia changed its positions on Ukrainian developments, reports DeutscheWelle.

German Chancellor said on November 24 at a congress of European Family Business in Berlin. “We are working every day on diplomatic resolution of this crisis. But unfortunately Ukraine’s territorial entity is being violated”, stated Merkel.

According to the Chancellor the sanctions are necessary while Russia makes no or few efforts to overcome the crisis in Ukraine. “They (sanctions) are inevitable”, assures the first German official.

At the same time Merkel admitted that the sanctions negatively affect the European, including German, economy. “Businessmen have nothing more important than legal safeguards, stability and peace”, she summarized.

It should be reminded that on November 18 in Brisbane during G20 summit raised a question on new sanctions against Moscow. According to the representative of the US President Administration, Barack Obama “started talks on further steps to step up pressure on Russia and provide further assistance to Ukraine”.
