Giga Bokeria: Ukraine showed how to break free from Russia's influence

The future of Ukraine will show if the European Union has a chance to survive.

The 10th Eastern Policy Forum “Transatlantic Community versus Eurasia - Arising Challenges and New Opportunities” is held in Warsaw. Deputy foreign minister and secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia Giga Bokeria attended the event. The politician said that the actions by the EU determine further developments: either the values and beliefs of democratic politicians are just words or decisive actions to rebuff the Kremlin will be taken.

A charter97.org offers extracts from his speech.

“The fate of Ukraine is vital for the future of the whole region. Georgia transformed its authorities peacefully. We elected the new government. It was a sort of a strength test for the new system. The country has faced a new test: if the opposition is able to work properly in the country now. We see that the pro-western opposition has been put on the back burner and criminal cases have been opened against certain pro-western politicians. Those promoting democracy in the country, in fact, stand against us. Violence must be punished. The current situation in the country is very dangerous.

Ukraine that struggles against Russia's aggression is a big problem for Putin, but events in Ukraine are vital for the whole region. It is a signal that any country of the region has a chance to break free from Russia's influence and join NATO in the foreseeable future.

We have approached the turning point: either we will determine the future of the whole region or our beliefs and the idea of democratic Europe will fail. Measures must be taken to defeat the Kremlin as it happened in the USSR. Let's put it straight, it is the 'cold war' with Putin. The expansion of NATO bewilders Russia, so Putin launched a reverse process of restoring the 'Russian world'. This is a clear message to the whole civilised world,” the politician said.

Giga Bokeria is a Georgian politician, secretary of the National Security Council since November 10 to November 2013, one of the leaders of the United National Movement. He co-founded Liberty Institute in 1996, became Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in 2005, deputy foreign minister of Georgia in April 2008 and secretary of the National Security Council in November 2010.
