Arseniy Yatsenyuk: Nuclear weapons in the Crimea are a challenge against the whole world

Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk called on Russia "to immediately implement Minsk agreements ".

On December 16, speaking at the conference of the Centre for European Policy within his working visit to Brussels, Yatsenyuk stated that nuclear weapons must not be placed in the Crimea, UNIAN reports.

According to the Ukrainian Prime Minister, "Russia repeatedly violates international laws, constantly launches threats against NATO, for example by air intrusion, and it has started to violate the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons". Yatsenyuk believes that the question of the deployment of nuclear weapons in the Crimea is "another sign of the conflict not only between Ukraine and Russia". "It is a challenge against the whole world countries and the world must respond with all means and methods, in order not to let Russia to place nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory as the Crimea is Ukrainian territory", the Minister stated.

Yatsenyuk noted that there had been several attempts made to reach peace agreements with Russia in Geneva, then in Normandy and in Minsk. "The only agreement we have is the Minsk ones that have been signed and agreed by Russia. And, in fact, president Putin supported the idea of the Minsk agreement, and then refused to implement it, "-the Ukrainian Prime Minister said.

"We urge the Russian Federation to immediately implement Minsk agreements. As Minsk agreements are not a carte du jour. All of 12 items must be fulfilled", Yatsenyuk emphasized.

He added that first of all it is necessary to put Russia-Ukraine border under control. "We must close the border, otherwise all efforts to de-escalate the situation in eastern Ukraine will make no sense", the head of the Government of Ukraine is convinced.

It should be reminded that last week Minsk should have held a meeting of the contact group towards resolving the situation in Ukraine, which should have been held in Ukraine-Russia-OSCE format with the participation of the Donbas separatists. Prospective negotiation dates were as follows: 9, 11, 12 of December, but the meeting was disrupted. The date has not yet been determined despite the fact that all the participants of negotiation process stand for it.
