Tusk: Ukraine to receive EUR 2 bln before New Year

Ukraine may receive financial assistance of EUR 2 billion from the European Union, the United States, Canada and the IMF before the end of this year.

The head of the European Council Donald Tusk said on Sunday in an interview with the Polish Radio, according to Ukrainian news service TSN.

"In fact, we are dealing with a situation that requires an immediate response, and we should not wait until next year, because it may be too late next year,” Tusk said.

“Firstly, we are talking about the financial assistance, and we are ready for this. It is not the sum Ukraine needs, as its needs are very large, but it is a serious amount."

Tusk said the second most important element of support for Ukraine is humanitarian aid.

"We’ve been helped once ... We Poles know better than most how important it is to have assistance at a critical time," he said.

As reported earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation with the IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

Poroshenko assured the head of the IMF that Ukraine would fulfill its obligations to the International Monetary Fund. The president called on the IMF to consider increasing its financial assistance to Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian Finance Minister Natalia Jaresko, Ukraine has made $14 billion in loan repayments over the last year, while receiving $9 billion in new loans.
