Bill on repealing Ukraine's non-bloc status introduced in Rada

The People's Front parliamentary group has registered a bill in the Verkhovna Rada on repealing the non-bloc status of Ukraine.

The party's press service spread this information on Wednesday.

The document was introduced by the People's Front leader Oleksandr Turchynov and MPs Andriy Parubiy and Serhiy Pashynsky.

“Unlike other bills, ours does not contain any curtsies to Russia. Ukraine gets rid of its non-bloc status, and a clear prospect of entering NATO will appear before our country,” Turchynov commented on the bill.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko earlier supported the idea of repealing the non-bloc status. Speaking at the first sitting of the Verkhovna Rada, Poroshenko noted that Ukraine's non-aligned status, which was approved in 2010, failed to guarantee the country's security and territorial integrity, so this status should be dropped.

As for Ukraine's joining NATO, Poroshenko noted that the decision would be taken at a referendum, which will be held only after Ukraine fulfills NATO standards.
