Druskininkai residents fear attack from Belarus

Residents of the near-border town are concerned over an unexpected power and water cut.

It happened on April 8. The resort town Druskininkai, as well as neighbouring Vieciunai and Jaskonys, have been remaining without power and water supplies since 10 a.m. The life in the towns is paralysed, and people are anxious, alytusplius.lt reports.

Some people were trapped in lifts, some were locked inside shops. Hospitals, dental centres and operating rooms cannot work as normal, ru.DELFI.lt writes.

“Maybe, it's a prepared attack. We are close to the border,” a Druskininkai resident worries.

“More than 1,000 people remain without power and water. It's a serious breakdown at the electrical substation in Druskininkai. Repair works are under way now, but it's unclear when the problem will be solved,” Ernestas Naprys, a representative of Lesto energy company, said.

The town Druskeninkai (Druskeniki) belonged to the Belarusian Soviet Republic in autumn 1939 – autumn 1940. The town and the neighbouring villages were given to Lithuania at the talks between the delegations of Lithuania and Belarus in Hrodna on October 1—2, 1940, after the creation of the Lithuanian Soviet Republic and incorporation into Soviet Union.
