Lithuanian Foreign Minister Met With Belarusian Opposition Leaders

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Met With Belarusian Opposition Leaders
LINAS LINKEVICIUS

During the meeting in Minsk Linas Linkevicius discussed a necessity to agree upon a “road map” for Belarus.

At the meeting the Belarusian side was represented by Ales Bialiatski, Siarhei Kaliakin, Anatol Liabedzka, Uladzimir Niakliayeu and Paval Seviarynets.

The chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka told Radio Svaboda about the subjects they had discussed:

– First Linas Linkevicius shared his impressions about the meeting with Uladzimir Makei. He stressed that there is an understanding what is going on, and that the expectations are not exaggerated.

The most important thing is that at the meeting with Makei a “road-map” we had sent to the European Union and the European Parliament was discussed. It is extremely important, as it is not enough simply to forward the materials, it is necessary to make it circulated in different corridors, and to become a talking point. It is a positive thing.

We discussed the necessity to change the electoral legislation. We had complete understanding on this point – we had five voices, but the same tune, one chorus.

But there are things the European Union lacks. The sanctions, which in fact could not be called sanctions, are frozen, but they are not connected to criteria of changes in Belarus. There is no “homework” for the authorities concerning changing the situation. At this point Mr. Linkevicius admitted that there are really no criteria. However he believes that the legislation, the space of freedom, the official registration for organisations and other issues could be and should be discussed.

We had a detailed, no-nonsense discussion, without any irrelevant stuff. We talked about changes in Belarus. As everyone is interested in them.
